5 Ways to Dodge Debt Over the Holidays

Try these tips if you’re dreading the mountain of holiday debt you’ll have to climb next month.

Here’s the bottom line:

No one is going to take you by the hand and say, “Hey, you’re spending more than you can afford. Are you sure you want to do this?”

So, if you want to avoid a hangover of holiday debt in January, it pays to pause for a moment before buying into beliefs like: “I have to buy these gifts, even though I can’t afford them.”

If in doubt, remember this: You are allowed to consider your financial well-being when making out your holiday gift list. Your needs matter just as much as the needs of your loved ones.

Try these 5 tips if you’re dreading the mountain of holiday debt you’ll have to climb next month.

  1. Step back from sacrifice

If you’re low on cash, reconsider giving expensive gifts to those you love. 

Anyone who truly loves you would never dream of asking you to give up necessities so they can have luxuries. Only people who are out for themselves would do that.

Would you like your Higher Power to show you all the other ways to show your love besides financial self-sacrifice?

If so, please say “Yes” out loud now.

Imagine light shining from the center of your heart. Let it beam up into your brain and fill it with ideas for showing love to your loved ones.

Note down any ideas that come up. Make those ideas the basis of your gift list.

2. Bail on bribery

If your bankroll is getting small, reconsider giving lavish gifts to those whose love or approval you are trying to win.

Love and approval that can be bought rarely lasts. The debt you accrue will hang on, piling up interest, until it’s paid.

Would you like your Higher Power to show you all the other ways to gain love and approval besides trying to buy it?

If so, please say “Yes” out loud now.

Picture light coming down through the top of your head and filling every cell of your body with warm, loving illumination.

Note down any ideas that come to mind. Keep them handy.

3. Lift the burden

If your loved ones are struggling financially, like you, consider suggesting everyone can exchange greeting cards instead of gifts.

Imagine the rejoicing if you let your loved ones off the hook from having to spend money they haven’t got. What a priceless gift!

Would you like your Higher Power to show you all the ways to have a wonderful holiday besides overspending?

If so, please say “Yes” out loud now.

Breathe in pure white light. If you don’t know how, just pretend you’re breathing in white light.

Breathe out white light, allowing it to carry away all your woes and worries. Imagine them floating away, like balloons soaring into the sky.

Picture the worries being replaced by whatever you want and need most. Sense your muscles relaxing into allowing your needs to be met now.

4. Keep it simple

If you feel you must give something, consider giving simple gifts like these:

Make gifts by hand: Bake sugar cookies and decorate them. Knit a scarf. Make chocolates, scrapbooks, tamales, candles, gingerbread houses, latkes … use your imagination.

Give of yourself: Offer to clean out a closet, organize a junk drawer, catch up over lunch, set up a smartphone … notice what needs to be done, and offer to do it.

Donate: Give money to your loved ones’ favorite charity: Red Cross, cancer research, animal shelter – whatever cause is close to their heart. You will spread love and light to all those touched by your generosity, even if it’s just a few dollars. You never know what will make a difference.

5. Reconnect with the Spirit of the Season

Whatever you give, give it with love.

As you fill out your cards, place each card between your hands and bless it. Bless the one who will receive it. The recipient will feel your love, and that is the greatest gift of all.

As you wrap your gifts, take each present in your hands and bless it. Bless the one who will receive it. The person you give it to will feel your love, and both of you will be blessed.

Whatever you call that which is greater than yourself –  your Higher Power, Hashem, Allah, God, Jesus, Source, the Oversoul, the Quantum Field … You are part of it, and it is part of you, because we are all One.

Quantum physicists tell us that in this holographic universe, the part is in the whole and the whole in the part, which means everything is connected to everything else.

What does that mean for you personally, in terms of Abundance?

Whether you are rich or poor, loved or lonely, tall or short …

You can never be closer to your Higher Power than you are right now …

And you can never be farther from your Higher Power than you are right now.

So, you might as well be rich.

You might as well be successful.

You might as well be cherished by someone you love.

Even if you have everything you want, you will still be close to your Higher Power, because nothing can separate you.

Maybe today is a good day for you to imagine your Higher Power wants for you what you want for yourself. Maybe that’s why you want what you want – because your Higher Power wants it for you.

It sounds kind of unfair, doesn’t it? And yet, it’s perfectly fair, because each of us is given as much as we will accept – no more and no less.

Abundant people accept themselves as they are. Because they accept themselves, they feel just fine about accepting Abundance. They know their worthiness is a given, rather than a question.

Maybe today is a good day for you to recognize your worthiness is a given, too – it’s as much a part of you as your eyelashes.

I get it. I’ve been hurt, too, to the point where I lost hope.

In fact, I ran from hope. It felt like torture, because my fear of disappointment was so great.

If you’re like most people who are hurting, you close off to your greater yet-to-be because you want to curl up in the seeming safety of a small life.

Maybe today is a good day to remember you are bigger than your brokenness …

Do You Have Shiny Object Syndrome?

This expensive malady can bust your budget …

So little time.

How do you choose what to work on next?

Before you start any new project to build your biz or brand, let me ask you:

Whatever success means to you, how worthy of success do you feel, on a scale of 1 to 10?

Notice the first number that pops into your head.

If it’s “8” or above, you’re good to go. Choose the project that excites you the most – and go for it. Doing what delights you helps you stay the course once the initial excitement wears off.

If it’s “7” or under, file under “Later” the program(s) you’re thinking about joining.

You’re on the verge of falling into Shiny Object Syndrome – a debt-generating malady that drives you to:

  • Sign up for exciting new programs …
  • Avoid starting or finishing the program …
  • Get distracted by a new Shiny Object …
  • Buy it …
  • Avoid starting or finishing it …

And so it goes, expensively ever after.

What is up with that?

Deep down, you feel unworthy of the success you believe the project will bring you…

So, whether you fear success or failure (or both), you unconsciously sabotage yourself with indecision, distraction (hello, new Shiny Object!), or realizing you must re-pot all your plants before you can concentrate on your new project.

Sound familiar?

It does to me. I’ve done all those things. How about you?

Here’s the thing. It’s not your fault.

If you’re like me, you’ve cultivated a sense of unworthiness since you were a child, out of a very understandable desire to avoid accusations like, “You’re getting too big for your britches,” “Who do you think you are?” or “How can you be so selfish?”

The great news:

You fell into a trance of unworthiness, and you can come out of it. Self Worth Here and Now

You start waking up the moment you decide to do so.

Then, you consciously own your worthiness so you can get unstuck and keep moving forward.

You may have to own your worthiness several times a day, until you shed your unconscious addiction to self-doubt … but think of the rewards:

  • Authentic self-confidence that empowers you to trust yourself to handle the wonderful people and exciting opportunities attracted by the glowing charisma confidence gives you
  • Deeply rooted self-respect that allows you to set healthy boundaries, so you have the time, energy and focus needed to move toward the greatness waiting to meet you
  • Heartfelt self-compassion that lets you see missteps as bumps in the road, rather than the end of the road, so you can stay motivated to find the Abundance that wants to find you.
